Simply titled ‘Sharing’, LAB’s approach to the Chaumont International Garden Festival’s theme of ‘Sharing the Garden’ creates a simple, yet thought provoking space, a meditation on the earth’s increasingly fraught physical systems. Given our ever-increasing world population, the theme of ‘Sharing’ begins to take on darker connotations than those that would spring immediately to mind. Yes, we have the opportunity to share the abundance and joy from one another, but we also have the burden of sharing limited resources. In this garden vignette, the concept of varying population densities- each with the same amount of space and the same amount of resources- opens an interesting discourse on how we share the planet. Within the equally-sized four garden squares, the first has one very large tree, the second has four large but somewhat smaller trees, the third contains 16 small specimens and the fourth has 64 seedlings.
