Urban Dwellings

Serving 160 families in a mix of garden apartments and townhouses, this public housing project shows the wear of seventy years of use by District families. In conjunction with a planned modernization of the project, the Landscape Architecture Bureau was asked to conceptualize a new vision for the exhausted landscape and outdoor spaces of the community. With the creation of threshold landscapes for each building entrance, clearly composed gathering spaces and a revised palette of durable and sustainable materials, the property as a whole will be able to act as a campus instead of isolated, individual pieces. The new landscape not only provides more meaningful outdoor spaces but also contributes to a strengthened sense of ownership, pride and self-confidence for the residents.
