The Apollo is a 450-unit retail and apartment building in DC on the H Street Corridor, a burgeoning neighborhood near Union Station. Many such developments have rooftop amenities of one sort or another, while the Apollo is distinguished by including not only two large recreation areas on the main 8th floor roof, but also incorporating four other rooftop courtyards on the second and fourth floors. The two upper-most rooftops incorporate a small swimming pool and deck for sunning, semi-private cabanas, terraced seating facing the extraordinary views to the west and south, cooking and dining areas, lounges both shaded and sunny, a lawn for sitting out or movie watching in the evening, and a dog-walking area. All of these areas are linked visually, but separated spatially by custom steel vine screens. The lower courtyards each have a different character: one is a lush fern garden with seating for one or two, one is an orderly parterre with seating for four, one is a larger social space with lighted, sculptural, perforated-metal “boxes,” and one is a community garden.
