The construction of Meadowlark Gardens, an arboretum and display garden in Fairfax County, Virginia, was begun in the late 1980’s, based on an earlier Master Plan. This revision to that earlier Master Plan is in the process of being implemented over a period of 30 years as funds are raised for construction. The 100-acre site is structured as a series of seven gardens, each designed to illustrate a different emotion, including joy, confusion and serenity. Other features include a visitors’ center, an education building, a conservatory for tropical plants, and a restored historic farmhouse surrounded by orchards and period gardens. Designed by Jonathan Fitch and Lanshing Hwang with HOH Associates.
